Xiaomi Redmi 5 vs Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus Technical Specifications Comparison Table
Ever since the company released its first smartphone back in August 2011, Chinese tech giant Xiaomi has always stood for disruptive innovation.
In its popular handset business, the brand achieves this by offering the latest innovations found on more expensive models by competing companies at a more affordable price point.
The freshly announced Xiaomi Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus stay true to the Xiaomi's mantra by heralding the arrival of the tall smartphone display with 18:9 aspect ratio in the lower midrange price echelon.
Prior to the release of these models, this screen type - replete with rounded sides and very thin bezels - used to only be available in upper midrange and high-end phones by other players in the market.
Redmi 5 and Redmi 5 Plus share largely the same key features and technical specifications with a few notable differences here and there. To put it simply, the latter is the larger and more powerful version of the former; Hence, the "plus" suffix.
The aluminum-clad Xiaomi Redmi 5, shown in all its color versions in the image set above, is equipped with a 5.7-inch HD+ IPS display panel, a 12 MegaPixel f/2.2 PDAF camera with single LED flash at the back, Full HD video recorder, 5 MP front cam for selfies, Dual SIM Dual Standby capability, 4G LTE support, and a non-removable 3,300 Li-Po battery pack. Inside, it runs its Android 7.1.2 Nougat operating system with a 64-Bit 1.8 GHz ARM Cortex A53 and Adreno 506 GPU based Qualcomm Snapdragon 450 processor, has 2GB and 3GB RAM options, and comes with either 16GB and 32GB of expandable storage.
On the other hand, Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus - which also has a real metal shell, sports a larger and clearer 5.99-inch IPS display, a 12 MP PDAF camera with f/2.2 aperture and Dual Tone LED flash, Full HD video recorder, 5MP front camera for selfies, Dual SIM capability, 4G LTE support, and a bigger 4,000 mAh battery pack for longer uptime. Under the hood, it has the same OS and processor as the Redmi 5 but it has 3GB and 4GB RAM options, and offers either 32GB and 64GB of expandable storage.
I made this tech specs comparison table to make it easier for us to spot the differences between these gadget siblings:
Now, when it comes to price, as expected - Xiaomi Redmi 5 is more affordable at $120 USD (Php 6,040) and $135 USD (Php 6,796) for the said variants while the two Redmi 5 Plus models go for $150 USD (Php 7,551) and $195 USD (Php 9,817).
Interested in these new smartphones? As of writing, Xiaomi still doesn't have an HQ in our country. However, the company does have authorized resellers nationwide -- and I think there's a big chance that these two handsets will be launched here within the next few weeks. Expect to pay at least a thousand pesos more than the converted amount, though, once these models reach our shores.
