By introducing the newest Pinoy Big Brother Teen Edition Clash of 2010 Housemates using social-networking-inspired profile pages -- specifically; K-Book (fictive, mind you), ABS-CBN via the PBB Team showed that the company completely recognizes the importance of technology, the internet and social media in the lives of the Filipino Youth.

And, why not?

According to a research done by Nielsen and Yahoo! in 2009, as of March that year, there are already a whopping 20 Million Filipinos online -- that's 22% of the Philippines' current 90 Million population -- and most of them are between 10 and 29 years old, part of the youth sector (clearly), educated and techno-savvy.

The Pinoy Youth Loves Social Media

During the site's heydays (circa 2003-2008, I believe), Filipinos accounted for the biggest percentage of Friendster's traffic - covering 39%, which translates to 13.3 Million out of 39 Million unique visitors daily. Based on the Nielsen figures posted above, we can infer that a large portion of this number is comprised of the Pinoy youth.

AllFacebook, on the other hand, disclosed in March 2009 that there are around 611,000 to 612,000 Filipinos in Facebook and a majority of them are college students or yuppies in the 18-to-24-years-old age group. Youth? Definitely.

NOTE: These are 2009 Facebook figures and I bet Filipinos have now gone way beyond the 1,000,000 members mark (debatable) -- as evidenced, IMO, by Vice Ganda's Record-Setting Facebook Fan Page with 1,265,847 fans as of 10:30PM, April 11, 2010.
