What is 4G Connectivity? Wi-Tribe and Globe WiMax Bring 4G to the Philippines !

Daren W. from Canlubang, Laguna DM'd TP this query via Twitter yesterday:
"Hi TP, what is 4G? Is 4G already available in the Philippines? Where can I avail of the service?"

Hi Daren!

4G, the successor to 3G and 2G connectivity, simply refers to the fourth (4th) generation of wireless standards. The 4G branded Mobile WiMAX (IEEE 802.16e-2005) mobile wireless broadband access standard offers peak data rates of 128 Mbit/s downlink and 56 Mbit/s uplink over 20 MHz wide channels.* via wiki. 4G WiMax supercedes 3G HSDPA as the fastest broadband technology currently available to the world. As such, we can expect 4G to deliver true wired speeds without wires.

Here's a diagram courtesy of MobileWhack showing trends in wireless standards, moving from CDMA [in the US vs. GSM in the Philippines] all the way to 4G:
