Smart Communications' Nano-SIM Card, Spotted! Multi-Band LTE Goes Live! Ready for iPhone 5!
The other night, following the official announcement of iPhone 5 along with Apple's confirmation that the device will indeed support Nano-SIM card in lieu of microSIM, Mr. Elijah Mendoza*, Smart Communications' Senior Public Affairs Officer, posted this curious photo on his Facebook Timeline. (He's my friend on the site and I'm pretty much always online on Facebook so yeah, I saw it almost as soon as it went live.)
If anything, the existence of Smart Postpaid Nano-SIM tells us that Smart has long been preparing for the arrival of the Cupertino company's new flagship smartphone as well as future devices that will support this kind of module. (*According to Elijah, Mr. Mon Isberto - Head of Public Affairs and Corporate Communications at PLDT-Smart, was the first one to post the photo online. So yup, TP gives Mr. Isberto full credit for this shot.)
But Nano-SIM isn't the only thing that will welcome iPhone 5 with open arms into Smart's camp later this year, I believe.
Almost two weeks back, Smart fired up LTE in 2100MHz and 1800Mhz bands officially making it the first multi-frequency service provider of mobile LTE in the Philippines and even one of the first in the world according to Mr. Rolando G. Peña, PLDT-Smart's Technology Group Head.
"Offering LTE in multiple frequencies will give us and our subscribers greater flexibility. Multi-band LTE means better coverage whether in densely or sparsely populated areas and a wider range of compatible devices," shared Mr. Peña.
Smart's LTE service which was launched last August 25 via Smart LTE Plan 3500 initially ran only on 2100Mhz similar to that being used by Japanese telco and LTE pioneer NTT DoCoMo.
Mr. Peña explains that multi-band LTE will likewise allow for the seamless international interoperability of LTE devices, which will be offered by Smart Communications in the near future.
"Smart has a history of offering its mobile services in multi-band configurations," he said. "Our GSM connection runs on 900Mhz and 1800MHz bands, and our 3G, HSPA, and HSPA+ connections run on both 850MHz and 2100MHz. These combinations give our service superior reach, flexibility, and resiliency."
OK. So I guess we're just waiting for them to announce #SmartiPhone5 now. Bring it on!
