O+ 8.16 Price, Specs, Unboxing, Release Date, Antutu Benchmark Test Score : 2013 Flagship Phablet by The American Company
Considering that 2012 flagship release O+ 8.12 was superseded by O+ 8.15, we weren't quite sure what kind of odd pattern the American electronics company is following in its product nomenclature. I mean, why skip 13 and 14?
A few weeks ago, I asked you what you think the name of the smartphone succeeding O+ 8.15 will be. Some answered O+ 8.17, O+ 8.18, O+ 8.19 among many others. Some even posted more creative titles than what O+'s alphanumeric naming scheme would have given. Today, it's finally official, TP Friends.
Meet O+ 8.16, the new flagship phablet of the American brand.
Dual SIM Dual Standby O+ 8.16 represents a major upgrade from the very popular and best-selling O+ 8.15. (Note, however, that O+ 8.15 will continue to be a co-flagship handset in O+'s current roster of smartphones largely because of the size difference between the two handsets. O+ 8.15 will be the flagship full-fledged smartphone ala Samsung Galaxy S4 and O+ 8.16 will be the co-flagship phablet like Samsung Galaxy Note3.)
The new phablet sports a ginormous 5.7 inch HD IPS display protected by an ultra-thin scratch-resistant glass touchscreen -- so thin that you feel like you're actually touching the display panel itself when you swipe your finger on it. Above the display, you will find the phone's 2 MegaPixel front camera (not interpolated) with BSI sensor for clear selfies even in low light conditions. At the back of the handset, we have the loud speaker and the 13 MegaPixel autofocus camera with LED flash and BSI sensor.
In terms of design, O+ 8.16 looks like a bigger albeit slightly thinner version of the O+ 8.6 midrange Android handset. Users get the same rounded design language replete with tapered sides, thin metallic accent running down the sides of the phone and framing the camera module, and a non-fingerprint-magnet matte plastic back case that should help prevent accidental slippage. Holding O+ 8.16, I'm impressed at how the US-based company was able to keep O+ 8.16's weight and thickness low while giving it such large display and a sizable, removable 2,500 mAh Li-Ion battery under the hood.
Firing up the phablet, you will be greeted by the very crisp and vibrant display showing O+'s unique wallpaper and icons set. O+ 8.16 runs Android 4.1.2 operating system without any custom skin but with a gamut of software enhancements including Air Shuffle for Music, Photos, Camera and FM radio, Flip to Silent, Shake to Answer or Hang-Up Call, Call & Type, and SMS Import and Export.
As I've shared, Air Shuffle is a patented technology by O+ that permits a touch-less Android experience by letting you take photos, browse images, play music tracks or change radio stations simply by waving your hand in front of the phone's display. This innovation - I find - is particularly useful for taking selfies using the main camera or when you want to browse the gallery while you're eating and your fingers are oily.
As for the innards, O+ 8.16 is powered by a Quad Core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A7 CPU and 357 MHz PowerVR SGX544 GPU based MediaTek MT6589T chipset and smoothly handles multitasking with 1 GB of RAM. There's 8 GB of internal storage (with 4.5 GB available to the user) that you can very easily beef up via the phablet's microSD card slot supporting up to 32 GB. These stellar internal technical specifications combine to give O+ 8.16 a high Antutu Benchmark Test Score of 13,436, which is well reflected in the lag-free gaming, video-viewing and overall mobile experience that the device delivers.
TP Friends, O+ 8.16 comes with a paper retail packaging that all O+ Android smartphone owners should be familiar with. Right out of the box, the phablet's touchscreen is protected by an opaque plastic film where you'll find a list of the device's key features and specifications.
The O+ 8.16 unit is joined in its box by the standard earphones, the charger, the removable 2,500 mAh Li-Ion battery pack, microUSB to USB connector cable, the user manual, and the free 8GB microSDHC card.
O+ 8.16 is now available at all O+ Kiosks and Stores located in major malls nationwide. The flagship phablet, which comes in Black and White color options, dons an official suggested retail price of only Php 12,995, which I think is just right for a device of its caliber. I invite you to give O+ 8.16 a test run at an O+ kiosk near you; The American company always makes sure that they have working units in their stores that consumers can try out before making a purchase.

O+ 8.16 comes with 1 year Limited Warranty on parts and services giving buyers complete peace of mind. Also, one thing O+ is particularly proud about is that all of their new Android releases support Wireless Software Update, which means that you users can eventually get firmware upgrades using their WiFi connection without having to go to an O+ service center.
