Watch Nokia World 2013 Abu Dhabi Official Online Livestream : TechPinas Event Round-up and Photos!
TP Friends, the three-man Nokia World 2013 Philippine delegation - including me, Sir Jong Arcano of The Philippine Daily Inquirer, and Sir Kap Aguila of The Philippine Star - safely landed in Abu Dhabi at around 3 o'clock this morning Manila Time .
The event, which will be held at the St. Regis Saadiyat Island Resort - will commence at 3PM Manila Time today with an opening keynote by Nokia CEO, Stephen Elop. You may watch his landmark presentation live via Nokia Conversations. You may also join TechPinas Facebook Community Page or Follow TechPinas on Twitter; That's where I will be posting my real-time updates.
As I've shared earlier, Nokia is expected to announce a new flagship smartphone - that will directly supersede Nokia Lumia 920, a new entry level Lumia, three smartphone lite Asha handsets, and a Windows tablet.
According to insiders, Nokia Lumia 1520 will be the company's new flagship smartphone set to compete directly on the phablet category. It is believed that the device will flaunt a massive 6-inch full HD display and will run Windows Phone 8 GD3 operating system with its Snapdragon 800 chipset. Sporting a 20 MegaPixel PureView camera, Nokia Lumia 1520 will provide a good alternative or option for users looking for a bigger handset with an excellent camera. As for the design, the phablet will be a cross between Nokia Lumia 1020 and 925 having the same unibody polycarbonate shell with matte finish and a protruding, rather small camera module at the back.
Nokia Lumia 525 is said to be the new entry level release. Unlike its predecessor - the very popular Nokia Lumia 520, 4-inch 525 is said to be positioned more as a WP handset for music lovers as it will ship with big over-the-head earphones.
Currently, one of Nokia's best-selling releases is the affordable Nokia Asha 501. Seeing great potential in this "sub-$100 full touchscreen" category, the Finnish giant is believed to be poised to introduce Nokia 500, 502, and 503 at Nokia World 2013. These dual-SIM handsets - with slightly varying features and capabilities - will more or less have similar technical specifications as that of 501 but will flaunt an improved shell with transparent dual-shot color panels and will ship with more pre-installed apps.
Finally, I'm expecting Nokia to formally introduce its much-talked about Nokia Lumia 2520 Windows 8 tablet. Insiders say that the slate, which also comes with a polycarbonate unibody case, will feature a 10.1 inch display with 1366 x 768 pixels resolution and will run Windows RT operating system with a Snapdragon 800 processor.
As of 10:30 AM, Abu Dhabi Time or 2:30 PM, Manila Time: I'm now inside the St. Regis Grand Ballroom for the Opening Keynote of Mr. Stephen. The Press and Bloggers are just waiting for him him to take the stage.
So which rumors and speculations turned out accurate?
Nokia Asha 500 with a 2 MegaPixel camera will hit store shelves in the United States soonest with SRP of only $69 or just Php 2,980.
Basically, all the previous speculations about the device turned out eerily accurate. Nokia Lumia 1520 indeed flaunts a 6-inch full HD display, a 20 MegaPixel PureView camera with LED flash, and runs on WP8 with GDR3 update - bringing screen orientation lock and lock screen notification among others - with a Quad Core Snapdragon processor.
WP8 GDR3 update comes in the form of Nokia Lumia Black upgrade that brings with it the new Nokia Camera App, which gives users Burst Mode, Camera Pro, and Video Recorder all in one interface.
Apart from the new Camera App, users will also get the Nokia Storyteller app that works like a Gallery replacement integrating photos with Nokia Here Maps.
According to Stephen Elop, the bigger screen on the Nokia Lumia 1520 really allows users to appreciate the capabilities of Microsoft Office suite for WP8. For example, the large display doesn't only make Excel easier to read, but also makes it easier to fill out or edit data on tables.
Nokia Lumia 1520's powerhouse innards, headlined by its Quad Core Snapdragon 800 processor and 2GB of RAM makes smooth gaming performance possible.
The real surprise of the afternoon came in the form of Nokia Lumia 1320, Nokia's mid-level 6-inch phablet. I read many insider infos prior to Nokia World 2013 and no one mentioned about this device.
Nokia Lumia 1320 sports a similar 6-inch LCD as as Nokia Lumia 1520 but the screen of the former only has an HD resolution versus Full HD on the latter. Also, whereas 1520 has a 20 MegaPixel PureView shooter and 1.2 MP front cam, its more affordable sibling (with swappable back covers) only has a regular 5 MegaPixel main camera with LED flash and VGA front cam.
Nokia Lumia 1520 will have an SRP of $749 or Php 32,285 when it becomes available later this year. Nokia Lumia 1320, on the other hand, will sell for just $399 or roughly Php 17, 210.
Perhaps the most exciting product announcement today was that of Nokia Lumia 2520 -- the Finnish giant's first ever tablet (although really, we have seen it in leaks before).
With polycarbonate unibody design identity similar to Nokia Lumia 1520, Nokia Lumia 2520 sports a 10.1 inch IPS LCD panel underneath its scratch-resistant Gorilla Glass 2 touchscreen.
The slate runs Windows RT 8.1 operating system with a Quad Core Snapdragon 800 chipset and handles multitasking with 2 GB of RAM. Just like other Lumia releases, it has good imaging capabilities made possibly by the rather powerful 6.7 MegaPixel main camera with Carl Zeiss lens and a 2 MP front-facing cam plus Nokia's unique imaging software and applications.
Like Lumia 1520, the Nokia Lumia 2520 tablet will also come with Nokia Storyteller app integrating Nokia Here Maps with photo-viewing experience for added nostalgia.
Dreamworks partnered with Nokia for the creation of the new Dragons Adventure game for the Nokia Lumia 2520 slate with companion application for Lumia handsets. This game, which makes use of Nokia's industry-leading location services, gives users a more immersive experience by basing game play on your current location or driving route and letting the rest of the family play along.
Nokia Lumia 2520 will sell for just $499 or Php 21,470 when it becomes available later this quarter.
And you can pair it with the Nokia Power Keyboard transforming the slate into sort of a laptop substitute while not adding too much to the device's weight. This accessory will sell for just $149 or more or less Php 6,410.
Nokia Lumia 1520, Nokia Lumia 1320, Nokia Lumia 2520, Nokia Asha 500, Nokia Asha 502, and Nokia Asha 503 complete the company's line-up of product offerings for the rest of 2013 until 2013.
Off hand, my favorite device of the bunch is Nokia Lumia 1520 as it combines big screen with stellar imaging capabilities. I'm a fan of big phablets and great cameraphones and since it's a combination of those two, I can't help but fall in love with it. The only downside, of course, is the rather steep or hefty price tag.
Aside from the devices, other exciting announcements during the event was the arrival of key applications and games to the Windows Phone platform, which include Vine, Instagram, Temple Run 2, and Flipboard. I guess they're now finally seeing potential in WP as a third ecosystem.
I have to hand it though to the CEO of Vine and the CTO of Flipboard for giving great presentations during the event. I like that they won't just be porting their apps from iOS and Android to WP but they really reworked and redesigned it to look and work well on Lumia devices.
I'm still working on my other posts and the event is not yet done, TP Friends. I hope you can bear with me. It's a hard to be a one-man-team in a tech event of this scale. It's tough but I'm very grateful for the opportunity and the trust that Nokia gave me so I'll do my best to post separate entries about each device announced today as soon as possible.

So which rumors and speculations turned out accurate?
Stephen Elop's Keynote address started at exactly 11 AM (or 3PM in Manila) just like what was written in the programme.
He started by recounting the success of Nokia's Asha line and then went on to unveiling Nokia Asha 500, 502, and 503, which we've all seen before -- thanks to insider leaks. All phones - with transparent dual-shot colored cases - appear to have similar technical specifications except for 3G support and imaging capabilities with Nokia Asha 503 having the most desirable set of specs.
But what sets these three releases apart from Nokia Asha 501 releases earlier this year is that they run an improved version of the Asha Touch operating system replete with an enhanced Fastlane and camera application. Although, really, Nokia Asha 501 is also slated to get these fresh features via a scheduled software update.
Nokia Asha 502 and 503, on the other hand, will sell for $89 and $99, respectively. I will dedicate separate TP posts for each of these new Ashas to help you see the subtle differences between them.
After announcing the Ashas, Stephen Elop introduced one of the more awaited devices in this event, the Nokia Lumia 1520.
