Starmobile Engage 8 Quad Price, Specs, Unboxing, Antutu Benchmark Score, Hands-On, Initial Impressions
Right after the Starmobile Gold Rush event at the Manila Peninsula last week, I had a quick chat with our friends from the company and they handed me this curious present for TechPinas from Happy Man Philippines.
With a very affordable price tag of only Php 6,990, Starmobile Engage 8 Quad - announced at Gold Rush - is the local electronics giant's first ever quad core Android tablet. And simply by looking at its gorgeous iPad-Mini-inspired design and stunning aluminum build and by giving its specs-sheet a quick glance, it's not hard to predict that it will do well in the market.
Before I give you the tablet's key technical specifications and benchmark scores, let's first check out Starmobile Engage 8 Quad's packaging as well as all the items inside the box.
The slate comes with a simple yet attractive paper packaging that's very eco-friendly. At the bottom of the box, we'll see the complete technical specs of the device -- from the dimensions and weight right down to the battery size and projected uptime. Such detailed specs table something that I wish all companies would print on the packaging of their releases just to make it easier for consumers to know the exact features of the gadgets that they are getting.
Aside from the unit itself, the box contains the charger, which has foldable prongs making it less of a hassle to have in the pocket should you want to always have it with you.
There's the microUSB to USB cable, which you will need for connecting the slate to your computer.
One of the key features of Starmobile Engage 8 is that it supports USB-On-The-Go and with this cable, you can instantly connect your flash drive to the device to quickly transfer files or you can plug-in your broadband dongle to enjoy mobile data on the tablet.
We have the standard earphones.
And the quick start guide...
That contains Starmobile's top App Store picks as well as information on how to properly charge the tablet, where to insert the microSD card slot, and how to power the device on.
And finally, we have the warranty certificate, which you'll need to present to Starmobile service centers should your Starmobile Engage 8 Quad require after-sales support within the 12-months parts and services warranty period.
As I've said, frankly, Starmobile Engage 8 Quad flaunts a design language that's very similar to that of the Apple iPad Mini. Both slates feature an anodized aluminum back case with tapered edges and thinner bezel framing the display down two sides.
In front, Happy Man Philippines' budget WiFi-Only quad core tablet sports a 7.85 inch IPS LCD with 1024 x 768 pixels XGA resolution. Above that, you will find the VGA fixed focus camera, which gives surprisingly bright - albeit not too crisp - shots even when used indoors with just enough florescent lighting.
The shell of the tablet, as I've shared, is made of real metal - aluminum to be exact. This doesn't just give the Engage 8 Quad a more attractive exterior but also makes the device more sturdy and durable.
At the back of the slate, we'll see the 5 MegaPixel autofocus camera that takes decent albeit not too vibrant shots, the loud speaker, the power button and the volume rocker, which all light up along with the display.
On the top panel, you will find the 3.5 mm audio jack, a pair of ports for microUSB and HDMI, and a couple of pinholes for the microphone and for quickly resetting the device.
Facing the back of the slate, the microSD card slot for expanding the 8GB (4.25GB user available) internal storage can be found near the lower left corner.
Starmobile Engage 8 Quad has dimensions of 199.6 x 134.3 x 9 millimeters - that's height x width x thickness - and it weighs just 338 grams, which is already quite light for a tablet of its size. Just for comparison, its look-alike - the iPad Mini - has dimensions of 200 x 134.7 x 7.2 mm and weighs 308 grams.
The Starmobile Engage 8 Quad runs Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean tablet-optimized operating system without any custom skin with its Quad Core 1 GHz ARM Cortex A7 CPU and PowerVR SGX544 MP2 GPU based Allwinner A31 SoC and handles multitasking with 1GB of RAM.
These innards combine to give the slate a rather high Antutu Benchmark Score of 12,058 and 5,368 for Quadrant Standard. So far, I've tried playing Temple Run 2, Candy Crush, Subway Surfers, Fast Racing 3D, and Raging Thunder 2 on the Starmobile Engage 8 Quad and I experienced no lags and stuttering graphics.
Apart from having the ability to receive updates over the air or via WiFi connection, one of Starmobile Engage 8 Quad's software features that the company is particularly proud about is the new Starmobile Sync application, which makes it easier for users to transfer content - including contacts, photos, music files, videos, among others - from their old smartphones to the tablet using Bluetooth connection.
TP Friends, here's a video of my exclusive interview with Mr. Ryan Uy, the Social Media Coordinator of Starmobile, about the many key features and main selling points of Starmobile Engage 8 Quad. I hope you can check it out to see the device in action.
Starmobile Engage 8 Quad should become available at all Starmobile Stores and Kiosks nationwide within this week. Again, its official suggested retail price is Php 6,990 only -- and if you ask me, for that amount, it's already a steal.
