THL W300 Price, Specs, Unboxing, Antutu Benchmark Score, Kimstore Promo : 6.5-Inch Full HD Quad Core Android Phablet with 2GB of RAM, Initial Impressions!
Following the success of its W11 Monkey King flagship release earlier this year, international electronics company, THL, is now poised to launch a more powerful and definitely bigger smartphone this coming Friday, November 22, 2013, in an effort to get a stronger foothold in the Philippines' very lucrative mobile devices market.
Flaunting a massive 6.5-inch Full HD IPS OGS display panel with 1920 x 1080 pixels resolution and 339 ppi pixel density, THL W300 easily eclipses and slays both the best-selling phablets Samsung Galaxy Mega 5.8 and 6.3 in terms of sheer screen size and display clarity. But it does so much more than that.
Considering that W300's official suggested retail price is only Php 13,990, it's truly amazing how the Chinese handset manufacturer was able to give it top-notch technical specifications while managing to keep it within its price echelon -- ensuring the smoothest and most enjoyable mobile experience that you can get on any THL device currently available.
The super phablet runs Android 4.2.1 Jelly Bean operating system sans any custom skin with its 1.5 GHz Quad Core ARM Cortex A7 and 357 MHz PowerVR SGX 544MP based MediaTek MT6589T SoC and handles multitasking with 2GB of RAM, which is a rarity in sub-Php 15,000 these days.
THL W300 has 32GB of internal storage (26GB user available) that you can further expand via the phone's microSD card slot supporting up to 64GB. This should provide more than enough storage for applications, games, music, photos, and videos for most regular users.
The phablet sports a 13 MegaPixel autofocus camera at the back with LED flash and an 8 MegaPixel front cam. Both of these shooters have a backside illuminated sensor (that's what's written on the box albeit THL reps claim that the camera simply features ISP technology) helping deliver clear and crisp photos and selfies even in low light conditions. Other features include a Full HD 30fps video recorder, removable 3,300 mAh Li-Ion battery pack, and WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G HSPA+ connectivity support.
Design-wise, I'd say THL W300 looks like an overgrown love child of Samsung Galaxy S4 and Samsung Galaxy Note2. It has the same glossy finish and rounded design language of the two high-end handsets and a metallic design accent with brushed finish framing the sides similar to what you'll find on the Korean company's 2013 flagship smartphone.
Here's what the THL W300's retail package looks like. At the bottom of the plain white box (with small, silver THL logo and company website address print), you will find the phone's key technical specifications albeit not all too detailed.
The package includes the THL W300 unit itself, the two-prong charger, microUSB to USB connector cable, the battery (THL gave me an extra battery pack), earphones, the Quick Start Guide user manual, and the warranty certificate.
I think the phone's 3,300 mAh Li-Ion battery is just right for a device with a very large and power-hungry 6.5-inch Full HD IPS display and 1.5 GHz Quad Core MT6589T chipset. The pack is not unusually large but should be good enough to give you around 8 to 10 hours of regular use, which include web-browsing, playing non-specs-intensive games, using social networking apps, texting, calling, and taking photos with low screen brightness.
The earphones have in-ear silicon buds that help cancel ambient noise while listening to music tracks or watching movies and videos.
The microUSB to USB cable is more than 30-inches long and has these round, protruding, concave design elements near the ends where you can rest your fingers when plugging them in or pulling them out of ports.
The charger in my pack has two rounded prongs so I'd have use an adapter when charging the phone in the Philippines. This is definitely not an issue nor a downside for me, though, since I can always use my other microUSB chargers.
The Quick Start Guide contains everything you need to know about THL W300. But really, most users should have no problems whatsoever navigating the phone and being familiar with its many features even without reading this.
THL is also selling this silicon case with flip cover that doubles as a stand for the THL W300.
As of writing, the company has disclosed the official SRP of this case but I heard that it should sell for around Php 500 to Php 700.
The outer part of the flip cover has a leather-like look and texture similar to what see on expensive Italian printed leather journals.
The back has holes for the camera module, LED flash, microphone, and loud speaker.
The phablet is held in place by a soft silicon case with glossy finish.
As I've said, the cover also transforms into a stand for THL W300, which should come in handy when watching videos, browsing photos, or checking websites via the browser in landscape mode.
Get this case for free when you purchase your THL W300 from Kimstore, my trusted online store! Starting on November 22, 2013 and until supplies last, THL will be giving you this case at no extra cost - on top of a few hundred pesos discount on the device itself - if you get the new flagship phablet from Kimstore, the Chinese company's exclusive and official online store partner! Oh, and for those who are into benchmarks, when we ran Antutu Benchmark Test on the phablet, THL W300 got a score of 15,133, which is expected from a phone with MT6589T SoC and 2GB of RAM.
The device's high 5,689 Quadrant Standard Score is well-reflected in the very smooth gaming and overall touch and multimedia experience that THL W300 delivers.
To wrap this up, here's a photo that I took showing a size comparison between Samsung Galaxy Grand Duos, Samsung Galaxy Note 3 flagship phablet, and the powerhouse and affordable THL W300, respectively. More about this stellar device on TechPinas soon!
