Huawei Ascend G6 Philippines Price Php 9,990, Complete Specs, Sample Camera Shots, Initial Impressions, In The Flesh Photos
Yesterday, along with the opening of its newest concept store located in SM North EDSA Annex, Chinese electronics giant Huawei launched the latest addition to its midrange line-up of Android smartphones in the Philippines.
Weighing only 115 grams - making it one of the lightest handsets in the market - and priced at only Php 9,990, Huawei Ascend G6 presents a great opportunity for Pinoy gadget fans who are on a tight budget to experience the key innovations that the Chinese company brings to the Android platform including the gorgeous Emotion UI and a slew of enhanced imaging capabilities -- especially for selfies.
Many consider the Ascend G6 to be the mini or reductive version of the best-selling 2013 TechPinas Badge of Excellence Awardee Huawei Ascend P6, which was - for a time - the thinnest smartphone in the world. And why not? The two devices have largely the same design identity, display type, and even camera features.
In front, the handset flaunts a clear and crisp 4.5 inch quarter HD IPS display (0.2 inches smaller than the HD display of last year's top-of-the-line release), which is a joy to look at in the flesh. Above that, we'll see the 5 MegaPixel front cam for selfies and below, we have three capacitive buttons which weren't present on Huawei Ascend P6 as the flagship had virtual buttons for navigating the interface.
The flat module replete with metal accent for the 8 MegaPixel autofocus camera with BSI sensor and LED flash is located on the upper left corner of the phone's back panel while the loud speaker grill can be seen on the lower left corner.
Here are some shots taken using Huawei Ascend G6 during the opening of the company's concept store in SM North EDSA Annex yesterday May 31, 2014. Jasmine Curtis was also announced as Huawei's newest celebrity endorser at the event. Kindly click on the photos for larger view.
The front facing 5 MegaPixel camera also has BSI sensor that helps it deliver bright shots even indoors or in low light settings. Additionally, there's a 10-level beauty mode that automatically evens out your skin tone and dilates your eyes giving you that "anime" look -- the higher the level, the more intense the post-processing. However, I find that Huawei Ascend G6's imaging algorithms for selfies is - as expected - is not as good as Huawei Ascend P6, which was one of my fave handsets for taking self-photos.
Huawei Ascend G6's back cover with matte finish can be opened and the user can also remove the 2,000 mAh Li-Ion battery should the phone require a battery pull for hard reset.
In lieu of a real metal frame and shell, G6 has this faux metal accent running down the sides. It even has a brushed finish mimicking a real metal look.
Inside the shell, Huawei Ascend G6 runs Android 4.3 Jelly Bean operating system skinned by the company's very own Emotion UI with its Quad Core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A7 and Adreno 302 based Qualcomm Snapdragon 200 MSM8212 SoC. The phone handles multitasking with 1 GB of RAM and has 4 GB of ROM that's expandable via microSD card slot. In terms of connectivity, G6 supports WiFi, Bluetooth, and 3G HSPA+.
Clearly, in terms of internal specifications, Huawei Ascend G6 isn't the most powerful device in its price echelon. I mean, the handset's performance is decent - you will get smooth touch response and screen transitions - but you'll find other devices (especially from local players) with slightly better innards in this price category. Nonetheless, in terms of looks and imaging capabilities, I think it's definitely a top contender. It's a gorgeous midrange phone with a great front cam and I know that a lot of consumers will appreciate that. Now, when you factor in Huawei Philippines' introductory promo for the handset, which brings its price down to just Php 8,990 - that's a thousand bucks less - on weekends when you purchase it at participating Huawei Concept Stores and dealers nationwide, I believe most you will agree with me when I call Huawei Ascend G6 a clear winner.
