Xiaomi Redmi 1s Philippines Price, Release Date, Full Specs, Antutu Benchmark Score
Last Thursday, August 28, 2014, Xiaomi Global formally introduced its 2014 entry-level smartphone Redmi 1s to the technology blogging community and the local media in the Philippines via an exclusive event at Draft Greenbelt 2 in Makati City.
Just like when the disruptive Chinese company introduced its Xiaomi Mi3 flagship in the country last June 9, 2014, Mr. Hugo Barra - Vice President of Xiaomi Global - gave a live demo of the product along with the many key features of the MIUI interface during the intimate gathering. This time, however, he also gave all attendees a brief look at the history of Xiaomi as a company and reminded us of the company's vision, which is to create innovation that everyone can enjoy.
As mentioned, Xiaomi Redmi 1s is an entry-level device. But I believe that's only true in terms of its price; Because for a device donning such an affordable SRP, the smartphone truly has a lot to offer in terms of technical specifications, features, and overall mobile experience.
Although - in my eyes - it's not particularly the cutest nor the most beautiful handset around, the Redmi 1s (known as Hongmi 1s in China) nonetheless gives budget conscious consumers an opportunity to experience all the cool innovations of the company's MIUI user interface (that geeks are raving about) on a device with decent features -- headlined by the 4.7 inch HD IPS display, 8 MegaPixel autofocus camera with LED flash and BSI sensor, 1.6 MegaPixel front cam, Full HD video recorder, 3G HSPA+ support, and a removable 2,000 mAh Li-Ion battery pack. Also, users who have multiple mobile numbers will also be glad to know that the device has two regular Mini slots and as such, comes with Dual SIM Dual Standby capability.
Under the hood, Xiaomi Redmi 1s is powered by a Quad Core 1.6 GHz ARM Cortex A7 and Adreno 305 GPU based Qualcomm MSM8228 Snapdragon chipset that's complemented by 1 GB of RAM for smooth multitasking and 8 GB of ROM that you can easily beef up using the handset's microSD card slot supporting up to 64 GB. The combination of these internal specifications give the smartphone an Antutu Benchmark Score in the area of 21,620 - as per Xiaomi's official internal testing.
Looks-wise, although - as I've said - it's not the most sleek or svelte phone around, it has a no-nonsense simplicity that I'm sure many consumers will find rather attractive. Personally, in terms of design and construction, I like that it feels very sturdy in the hand; It has a reassuring heft that's quite rare in devices in its price category. I wish it's a bit lighter though -- because for a 4.7 inch handset, it's quite heavy at 158 grams.
So when will it be available in the Philippines and how much will it be? Well, the handset will be up for purchase at Lazada - Xiaomi's official e-commerce partner in the country - starting September 4, 2014 at exactly 12 noon. And get this: The official suggested retail price of Xiaomi Redmi 1s is only Php 5,599! Believe it! And to echo myself on my Xiaomi Mi3 post, "At that amount, this release is already a steal."
