Gionee GPad G5 Price, Specs, Camera Samples, Features, Initial Impressions
Last Friday, when I visited Gionee Philippines' spanking new, first-ever Concept Store in SM Megamall Cyberzone, a friendly store staff approached me and - after showing me some of the live demo units that are on display - let me in on one cool information about one of their newer handset models.
"Sir, mabenta ngayon ang Gionee GPad G5 [Sir, Gionee GPad G5 is selling well]," he said. And as soon as he handed me the phone, I instantly got why consumers seem to be falling head over heels in love with it.
He was talking this smartphone. It's a phablet with a massive 5.5-inch HD TN display protected by scratch-resistant DragonTrail Glass and runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with Gionee's very own Amigo user interface.
Obviously, the highlight of Gionee GPad G5 would have to be its large screen, which greatly helps it give users an enjoyable gaming and viewing experience. However, that's not the only thing that's cool and notable about it. For one, the device flaunts this 'heavily-cornered' look giving off a rather masculine vibe that I'm sure many male consumers would find suave and attractive.
At the back, you'll find the phone's dual Yamaha speakers that doesn't only go really loud but also delivers top-notch sound quality. Of course, there's the main camera; This one is an 8 MegaPixel autofocus shooter with LED flash. I've played with it and I'd say it's just alright in this department. Here are some sample shots:
I'd say Gionee GPad G5's main camera is inferior to that of Gionee Elife E7, Gionee Elife E7 Mini, and Elife S5.5 both in terms of quality of shots and focus speed. Nonetheless, I believe it should be good enough for most casual consumers.
Under the hood, Gionee GPad G5 is powered by a 1.5 GHz Hexa Core ARM Cortex A7 and Mali 450 MP4 GPU based MediaTek MT6591 chipset that's complemented by 1 GB of RAM and 8 GB of expandable internal storage. These innards make this Dual SIM Dual Standby 3G-enabled phablet totally capable of delivering a smooth 3D gaming experience. Overall, I find the phone's touch response and screen transitions fast and lag-free.
One point for improvement - I believe - would have to be it's battery, which is just a removable 2,400 Li-Po pack. I wish it was at least 3,000 mAh considering the size of phablet's display as well as its powerhouse chip. Nonetheless, when I think about all the strong points of Gionee GPad G5 and the fact that this stellar release only sells for Php 9,499, I find it hard not to love it for what it is and not to brush off its few weaknesses. In fact, I'm inclined to recommend this device for all Android fans who may be on a tight budget but are interested in getting a phablet that gives great value for money.

The GPad G5 has these real metal design accents that - I think - really give it an air of durability and sophistication.

In terms of the phone's imaging capabilities, I find the front facing selfie camera to be more impressive than the one at the back. As you know, I love taking selfies and this shooter's beauty mode really gives you nice photos. That's my new friend Ian of Belexis Concepts, the official distributor of Gionee smartphones in the Philippines.
