Samsung Galaxy Core 2 Philippines Price Php 8.990, Specs, Antutu Benchmark Score, Features, In the Flesh!
For Php 8,990 (or even less), you can already get a powerhouse Octa Core Android smartphone with a large HD display from any of our local handset players. But if you're a big Samsung fan and, for you, no other electronics company can possibly be worthy of your hard-earned money, here's the smartphone from the Korean Giant that you can get for that amount.
As its very name suggests, Samsung Galaxy Core 2 is the follow-up to last year's moderately successful Galaxy Core, which targeted entry-level users - including students and yuppies - who want an affordable Dual SIM Android smartphone with a fairly large display.
Apart from donning an updated look - reminiscent of Samsung Galaxy Note 3 (the metallic rim) and Samsung Galaxy Prime (the matte back cover), the second generation Galaxy Core likewise features specs enhancements both obvious and under the hood.
To be specific, this year's release comes with a 4.5-inch display and a Quad Core processor as opposed to the 4.3-inch screen and Dual Core chipset on the the 2013 version. Both phones, however, have the same 5 MegaPixel autofocus camera at the back, VGA front cam, and 480p video recorder.
What's the exact Quad Core chipset this phone is running on, you ask? It's a Quad Core 1.2 GHz ARM Cortex A7 and Mali 400 GPU based Spreadtrum SC7735S chipset. It's a lot like MediaTek MT6582, I guess, but with a lower clockspeed. Spreadtrum is a semi-conductor company that's based in Shanghai, China and is one of larger chipset makers for smartphones currently.
Samsung Galaxy Core 2 runs Android 4.4.2 KitKat with TouchWiz Essence UX skin right out of the box. In the short amount of time that I spent playing with this phone, I didn't notice any lag when swiping through the TouchWiz home screens as well as the app drawer panels and I found its camera's shutter speed to be quite snappy. I guess the combination of the Quad Core SoC and the rather low-res WVGA display really results in improved touch response and smoother transitions.
Should you get it? Well, like what I said, there are a number of smartphones in this price echelon from players both local and international (like O+, Xiaomi, THL, and Gionee) with far better technical specifications and features that you might want to check out. However, if you're in love with Samsung and you think TouchWiz is the best Android interface out there (plus, you've long been dreaming of owning a smartphone from the Korean Giant), by all means, make that purchase.

Interestingly, despite receiving a spec bump in almost all departments, the Galaxy Core 2 actually has less RAM compared to its predecessor; just 768 MB versus 1GB on last year's release. Perhaps, this explains why we're not seeing a significant increase in its Antutu Benchmark Score coming from the first generation Galaxy Core. (Photo by PhoneBunch)
