Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge is More Expensive To Make Than Apple iPhone 6 Plus
Here's another cool fact about the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge: Did you know that, thus far, it's the most pricey Galaxy handset to make? It's true. In fact, it's even more expensive to build than the Cupertino company's current battleship phablet, the Apple iPhone 6 Plus!
According to a report [source], "The 64 GB version of [the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge] built for use on Verizon Wireless’ network cost about $290 to build, including parts and assembly. That’s about $34 per unit higher than the costs of the Galaxy S5 released last year, and even higher than the most costly versions of Apple’s iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 Plus. IHS estimated the top end of the materials cost on those phones at $247 and $263. The 64GB version of the phone sells for $699 without a contract and some versions cost more."
And yet, amazingly, Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge has a more affordable retail price compared to the Apple iPhone 6 Plus. Upon launch, the 64GB version of the former donned a price tag of Php 47,990 in the Philippines while the latter sold for Php 49,599. Andrew Rassweiler - an analyst who heads IHS’ tear-down research efforts - shares, "Samsung is clearly studying Apple’s playbook by using things like metal enclosures and other design choices that are similar to Apple’s. The bottom line is that this phone costs less than an iPhone to buy, but it costs Samsung more to build."
But what exactly made the Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge so expensive to craft or put together? Well, the most pricey part of the S6 Edge is its unique curved display, which costs around $85 USD. It's followed by the 64-bit Octa Core Exynos processor by Samsung which goes for $29.50. Other internal parts like the $27 DDR4 RAM and $25 64GB ROM greatly add to the overall amount. Of course, the shell or external part of the handset - made of anodized aluminum and dual Gorilla Glass 4 panels - also contribute to its hefty construction cost.
Now, I don't know about you guys -- but learning this merely made me appreciate my Samsung Galaxy S6 Edge all the more. This smartphone doesn't come cheap at Samsung Stores in the Philippines and I bet consumers will be glad to know that, at least, the Korean Giant didn't scrimp on the cost of its parts and components. Thumbs up, Samsung!
