Meizu MX5 Philippines Price and Release Date Guesstimate, Full Specs, Key Features
Officially announced last June 30, 2015, Meizu MX5 - as its very name suggests - officially supersedes the TechPinas Badge of Excellence Awardee Meizu MX4 as the Chinese handset maker's latest flagship smartphone.
As the new top-of-the-line release, the MX5 definitely comes with better technical specifications and imaging capabilities along with better design and construction - if a bit - compared to its predecessor from late 2013.
Before I give you the key features of this model, let's check out these Meizu MX5 unboxing photos courtesy of TechPP.
There are three departments where one can say that the Meizu MX5 is indeed better than the older flagship. First, it flaunts a bigger and more energy efficient 5.5-inch AMOLED display with more standard Full HD resolution versus the 5.2 inch 1152 x 1920 pixels IPS screen of the MX4. Second, MX5 now features a one-touch fingerprint scanner similar to that of the MX4 Pro phablet, which is absent on the MX4. And finally, the 2015 model comes with improved technical specifications headlined by the powerhouse MediaTek Helio X10 chipset, 3GB of RAM, and 5 MegaPixel selfie cam.
As for the software, the MX5 runs Meizu's very own FlyMe 5.1 operating system, which is simply a heavily-customized, app-drawer-free version of Google's Android 5.0 Lollipop OS. It comes with downloadable themes, has unique notifications and multitasking panel designs, and lets you access Google Play Store.
Aside from the new finger scanner (called 'mTouch') below the display, MX5's entire build, I would say, is largely similar to that of MX4 -- which is not bad at all, considering that the latter is quite easily one of the best looking Android smartphones ever released. Users get the same CNC-prepared aluminum shell with machine drilled loud speaker holes. Just from looking at photos of the phablet, I think Meizu MX5 looks like a cross between the iPhone 6 and HTC One M9.
To quote Meizu, "Even with the 100% metal body, the MX5 still offers a delicate internal design and material choice. We have kept the weight at 149g, which is barely heavier than the MX4. The AMOLED screen is lighter and thinner, reducing the thickness to only 7.6mm, which is 1.3mm thinner than the MX4. In order to make it stronger, we have increased the thickness and added reinforcing ribs on all surfaces. While being light and firm, the MX5 is a strong device that is easy to carry around and use. [...] For both the mTouch button and the camera metal ring, we have unified the color in all the metal you see. This way, deep grey, silver, and champagne gold colors cover the entire body, and show off the perfect polishing, The MX5 looks gorgeous at first sight, and further impresses with its fine looking details. Our pursuit of a harmonious and unified appearance is based on our idea that the MX5 is not only a strong high-tech assistant, but also an elegant accessory to hold."
So when is Meizu MX5 arriving in the Philippines? According to our friends from Novo7Tech - the official distributor of Meizu smartphones in the country, the MX5 will definitely land here 'within the year'. I'm guessing that should be within Q3 2015 since the handset is scheduled to be released in China and other key markets within this month, July 2015. As for its price, the TP Guesstimate is roughly Php 15,000 for the 16GB model and Php 17,000 for the 32GB variant. These figures are based on the SRPs of Meizu MX4 when it was released in the country in December 2013. Here's to hoping Meizu MX5 would be more affordable -- but I'm not holding my breath for that to happen given the design and powerhouse specifications of the model. Stay tuned for updates, TP Friends.

The phone's packaging design is a cross between that of the iPhone 5S and Meizu MX4
Instead of a manual, you get this three-page catalogue giving you the key innovations that you can enjoy on the handset.
The thick carton catalog also forms part of this individual container that protects the phone during shipment.
The complete retail package includes the unit itself, the travel charger with two round prongs, microUSB to USB cable, and - finally - Meizu earphones!
This one's obviously inspired by the Apple Earpods
