Sony Xperia C5 Ultra Dual : Selfie-Centric, Near-Borderless Phablet, Officially Announced!
It's official! Sony Mobile has just announced its handsome 2015 midrange phablet that's made for those who love to take selfies.
And amazingly, all of the details that we disclosed in our early Sony Xperia C5 Ultra post turned out true and accurate. Kudos to XperiaBlog, really.
As we've shared previously, the C-Series is Sony Xperia's line of smartphones for mid-level consumers who are planning to get a gorgeous smartphone with decent internal specs, good main camera, high-res selfie cam with front facing soft LED flash, and a large display putting the device well within the phablet category.
As a 2015 release, Sony Xperia C5 Ultra builds upon all the strengths of its predecessors and takes the line to a higher level. Not only does it come with best selfie camera you'll find in the legendary Japanese company's current product catalogue but it also features a stunning new design as well as a good set of innards.
According to Sony, "With front and back cameras that are equally powerful, Xperia C5 Ultra lets you share the full story – better than ever. Use the wide-angle front camera for more inclusive group shots. And snap sharper pics with Auto Scene Recognition and autofocus on both front and back. Now you can share the who, the where and the what you’re up to, in the clearest quality imaginable."
They added, "Our best selfie phone yet delivers sharper than ever selfies on the first take. Auto Scene Recognition ensures you always get the perfect shot and our unique Selfie Flash lights up more of the picture, for clearer selfies day or night. Backlight isn’t a problem either thanks to HDR. Hello, sunset selfies!"
The Xperia C5 Ultra sports a 13 MegaPixel autofocus camera with Exmor RS sensor for enhanced low light performance, HDR Mode, and Soft LED flash on both its front and back panels. It's one of the very few handsets out there that has a front cam which is equally as powerful as the one at the rear. In fact, this phablet's selfie shooter even has a 22mm wide-angle lens allowing it to capture more of the subject, his or her friends, as well as the background.
The two powerhouse camera modules are brought to life by Sony's top-notch imaging software that comes with a variety of useful pre-set shooting modes, including Style Portrait - letting you add lighting effects to your selfies, AR Mask - that allows you to place a different face over your own face or others’ faces while you snap a selfie, group photo or video, all for fun, and Face-In - which lets you use both the front and back cameras of your Xperia device, overlaying the images in a number of unique ways.
As for the phablet stunning design, Sony shared that they managed to maximise the C5 Ultra's display without adding bulk to the device. With a wafer-thin bezel, the phablet is almost all screen. 'Together with a cool aluminum frame and an ever so slightly curved back with high-gloss finish, it’s a smartphone that feels as good as it looks.' And I agree. I think Sony Xperia C5 Ultra is one of the most good-looking handsets in this price category currently.
Under the hood, 4G-enabled C5 Ultra runs its Xperia-UI-skinned Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system with a 1.7 GHz MediaTek MT6752 chipset incorporating eight ARM Cortex A53 CPUs and a Mali-T760 GPU, handles multitasking with 2GB of RAM, and comes with 16GB of internal storage that users augment using the phone's microSD card expansion slot supporting up to 200GB. In terms of internal hardware, one downside - I would say - is that the device only has 2,930 mAh battery pack, which is quite small considering that the phablet has a massive 6-inch Full HD IPS display. But then, as I've noted, this is probably 'one of the compromises that Sony had to make to keep both the heft and price of the phablet low.'
There are two variants of the Sony Xperia C5 Ultra that are set to be launched globally within August to September 2015. One is a single SIM version and the other - which I prefer - is a Dual SIM Dual Standby model -- both of which support nanoSIM cards. As for the price, my guesstimate is Php 16,500 for the one SIM option and around Php 18,000 for the version with two SIM slots. Here's to hoping that Sony would consider the Philippines as key market for this release so we could get it ahead of other territories.
