Nokia OZO 360 VR Sells for Php 2.08 Million : What's It For Exactly?
From having an official price of $65,000 or around Php 2,783,850 when it was announced earlier this year, Nokia OZO VR now goes for $45,000 or Php 2,087,887.50 with current conversion and before taxes.
I know. It's on sale but it's still super expensive.
For those who are seeing this gadget for the time, I know you're wondering: What is it exactly and what can it do that makes it so pricey?
Well, basically, Nokia OZO is a big and really, really powerful 360 VR camera. So powerful that the target market for it are film-makers and top-level content creators.
Weighing 4.2 kilograms and with dimensions of 10.4 x 6.7 x 6.3 inches, the aluminum-clad Nokia OZO has eight synchronised 2K x 2K progressive scanning f/2.4 sensors that - together - give full spherical and stereoscopic video capture with 360 x 360 surround sound array picked up by eight microphones.
At its heart, OZO has a 500 GB solid state drive that should be good enough to storing up to 45-minutes of footage recorded using the device. The file format is MOV wrapped OZO Virtual Reality 8Ch raw Video at 30 frames per second and 8Ch PCM Audio, which can then be edited using Nokia OZO's application for Mac OS.
Here's a sample recording:
To be honest, even when viewing in 4K, I'm a bit underwhelmed by the quality of the clip.
Currently, Nokia OZO still has a number limitations or points for improvement. To be specific, the frame-rate could be higher, the dynamic range could be at 14 full stops, and the video resolution could be higher - these are pretty realistic requests especially when you consider the ultra-hefty price tag of the camera. Nonetheless, we have to still give credit to Nokia for being at the forefront - yet again - of bringing this new technology to a bigger stage. I mean, while the product is still far from perfect, it still represents a step forward in the right direction.

The device is designed and constructed in such a way that it can dissipate heat well without fans. There's an inner ball where all the image processing takes place, which is separated form the exterior ball by a pocket of air.
