OPPO A83 Philippines Price is Php 9,990 : Specs, Unboxing, Initial Impressions
Chinese tech giant OPPO Mobile has started to bring some of the most loved features of its OPPO F5 hero Android smartphone to more affordable price segments.
Donning an SRP of only Php 9,990, the new OPPO A83 already has a tall 18:9 display, Facial Recognition, as well as the company's renowned AI Selfie Beautification technology.
Before I talk more about this handset's key specs, let me show you its packaging as well as everything that's inside the box.
The device ships in this white box, which has an image of the A83 printed on the cover. Frankly, it kind of reminds me of Apple iPhone 8's packaging.
At the bottom, the company printed four of the main highlights of this model including the big screen and the fairly large battery pack.
The official retail pack includes the smartphone unit itself, Quick Guide, Safety Information Guide and Warranty Certificate, Travel Charger with 2A output, microUSB to USB cable, earphones, SIM card tray ejector pin, and free translucent plastic hard case.
The phone, which has a pre-installed protector, is wrapped in a plastic sleeve to protect it during shipment.
OPPO A83 is available in two colors: Gold and Black. Needless to say, I have the latter.
Just from looking at the phone, it's hard to tell whether the shell is crafted from plastic or aluminum largely because entirely covered with paint and there also no shining diamond-cut accents lining the glass in front.
However, the device feels cold to the touch and also has a reassuring heft, which gives away the fact that the enclosure is made of real metal.
Quick Side Note: The Black version has a matte finish, which shows skin-oil stains more prominently than the Gold version.
Design-wise, OPPO A83 looks more subdued and plain compared to the OPPO F5 and even the F5 Youth. I actually find its simplicity quite attractive -- but I know not everyone will agree with me.
In 2017, smartphones having a tall 18:9 aspect ratio display became trendy and OPPO joined the bandwagon by putting the same type of screen on the OPPO F5.
This model's 5.7-inch HD+ 1,440 x 720 IPS display represents OPPO's effort to bring this key feature to the lower midrange segment. And although this panel is not quite as pixel dense as what's on the OPPO F5 Youth (which has a Full HD+ screen), it remains to be a treat for consumers who will be experiencing the 18:9 aspect ratio for the first time.
As for imaging capabilities, OPPO A83 has an 13 MegaPixel f/2.2 camera at the back with snappy touch focus and decent low light performance as well as an 8 MegaPixel f/2.2 front cam for selfies.
Last year, OPPO F5 became a TechPinas Badge of Excellence Awardee on the merit of its innovative AI Beautification Software that instantly figures out the age, race, gender, and skin type of the user to deliver beautified selfies that capture the essence of the owner's face; Hence, the slogan "Captures The Real You".
OPPO A83 also has this unique software feature, which means that this model is easily one of the best selfie-centric phones that you can get below Php 10,000 this Q1 2018.
The front-cam also comes replete with Facial Recognition system - another OPPO F5 feature - that allows you to unlock the device simply by holding the camera up to your face, instead of keying in a password or swiping a pattern.
This handset is powered by a non-removable 3,180 mAh Li-Ion battery pack, which should give you around 10 hours of uptime with regular use. You'll probably be able to squeeze out more hours of use from it if you implement battery saving measures like lowering screen brightness and minimizing connectivity.
Under the hood, A83 runs its Color-OS-customized Android 7.1 Nougat operating system with an Octa Core 2.5 GHz ARM Cortex A53 and Mali-G71 based Mediatek MT6763T Helio P23 processor, has 3GB of RAM, and comes with 32GB of onboard storage that's easily expandable using the dedicated microSD card slot. Not bad for an early 2018 Android smartphone by an international brand in this price range.
Alright! That's it for now. If you're interested, you can now purchase OPPO A83 at all authorized OPPO retail outlets nationwide and online. I believe you can also get it via installments through Home Credit if you qualify for it.

The protective case has grooves for the hardware buttons as well as a hole at the back for the camera and LED flash. The inner lining is also textured, which makes it look more interesting when installed on the phone.
Some users prefer earphones that don't have in-ear silicone buds. This pair should be good for them.
