Xiaomi Mi 6X Philippines Price and Release Date Guesstimate, Key Features
Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is slated to formally announce its 2018 hero midrange smartphone, the Mi 6X, today - April 25, 2018.
However, two days ago, the smartphone made a surprise appearance on Google's official Android devices catalog where its key technical specifications were unceremoniously disclosed.
On top of that, various tech blogs from China were able to get hold of the official prices of two variants of the Mi 6X from their "insiders".
Apparently, the 4GB RAM + 64GB ROM version will don an official price of CNY 1,799 or around PHP 15,000 with current conversion while the 6GB RAM + 64GB ROM variant will come in at CNY 1,999 or roughly PHP 16,600.
The converted amounts are also my price guesstimates for both models if and when they get released in the Philippines within the next three months.
Having the above-mentioned prices puts the Xiaomi Mi 6X in direct competition with some of the most popular mid-level Android smartphones that have just been released in the market, including OPPO F7, Vivo V9, and Huawei P20 Lite. This actually makes me wonder if this new handset actually has what it takes to even make consumers look given all the options that are out there.
Design-wise, Xiaomi Mi 6X looks like a device that's made out of parts taken from popular smartphones from other brands.
I mean, the Dual Camera module at the back looks like that of the Apple iPhone X. The face that features a 6-inch notch-free, tall display - with 18:9 aspect ratio, FullHD+ resolution, plus rounded corners - reminds me of OPPO F5's. And finally, the real-metal back panel with those antenna bands on either poles is reminiscent of the Huawei Nova 2i.
I'm not sure how Xiaomi was able to do it but despite looking like a shameless hybrid of those models, Mi 6X ended up being quite attractive -- at least in these press photos.
In fact, that's just one of the handful of things that I think buyers would love about this device. Here are the others:
The smartphone has a Dual Rear Camera module made up of a primary 12 MegaPixel shooter with Sony IMX486 primary sensor, f/1.8 aperture, Phase Detection AutoFocus plus a 20MP Sony IMX376 secondary sensor. I believe these two optics work together to deliver Bokeh Effect and 2X Lossless Zoom just like what Xiaomi Mi A1 can do.
For those who love snapping selfies, Mi 6X has a 20 MegaPixel front-cam that's powered by the latest version of the Xiaomi's Beautification software that instantly detects and accentuates hundreds of facial points and features.
For heavy gamers and power users who aren't quite ready to get a flagship-level device, this handset should provide a viable alternative as it is powered by a Qualcomm Snapdragon 660 processor with eight Kryo 260 CPU cores and an Adreno 512 GPU.
So far, I'm only seeing two glaring down sides:
1. It no longer has a 3.5mm audio jack, which is odd, considering that Xiaomi's wired earphones are very popular.
2. The battery capacity is quite small at just 2,910 mAh. (Then again, 14nm Snapdragon 660 is known for having stellar energy efficiency.)
Other notable features of this model include its AI Assistant - similar to Samsung's Bixby, USB Type C port for faster charging and data transfer, Dual SIM capability, 4G LTE Cat12 support, Fingerprint Scanner, and 4K video recorder at the back.
Xiaomi Mi 6X is available in five classy and elegant colors, including Red Flame, Glacier Blue, Black, Cherry Powder Pink, and Sand Gold.
Kindly stay tuned for updates! I will be updating this entry regularly or every time I hear fresh details about this smartphone.
Side Note: Xiaomi Philippines has yet to release official information about the Xiaomi Mi 6X. As of writing, the hero midrange handset of the company in our market remains to be the best-selling Xiaomi Redmi 5 Plus.
