Xiaomi Pocophone F1 vs Honor Play Specs and Price Comparison Table
"Sir Mark, which smartphone is better - Honor Play or the newly announced Xiaomi Pocophone F1?"
That's probably the one tech question that I've been asked the most on Facebook Messenger since Xiaomi Philippines officially announced the imminent release of Pocophone F1 at around 4PM yesterday, August 27, 2018.
I understand why my readers and followers are pitting these two Android handsets against each other. Both have flagship level features - here and there - all while having a midrange price tag that's easy on the pocket.
To answer the above-mentioned question in the most objective way that I can, I decided to make this side-by-side technical specifications table so we can figure out more easily which smartphone has superiority in which specific departments or areas.
Let's go through each detail or specification one by one.
Dimensions - Honor Play is slimmer and thinner than the Pocophone F1 but the latter is slightly shorter.
Weight - Honor Play is lighter by exactly 4 grams.
Screen - Amazingly enough, Honor Play has a larger viewing area at 6.3 inches across compared to just 6.18 inches for the Pocophone F1. Although both IPS screens have a FullHD+ resolution, the one on Honor Play has a taller 19.5:9 Aspect Ratio, which also gave it a higher screen-to-body ratio of 83%
Notch - Both models have one but the one on Honor Play is smaller.
Screen Protection - Honor didn't disclose which glass they used on their phone but Xiaomi was clear that Pocophone F1 has a Scratch-Resistant Gorilla Glass face.
Front-Facing Camera - Pocophone F1 has a higher resolution 20MP f/2.0 selfie snapper versus just 16MP f/2.0 on its rival.
Rear Camera - The two handsets have a Dual Camera Module at the back, which are made for capturing portraits and product shots with bokeh effect. Pocophone F1 has a 12MP f/1.9 + 5MP set-up while Honor Play features a 16MP f/2.2 + 2MP module. Pocophone, on paper, should have a better low light performance simply on the basis of its primary shooter's wider aperture.
Video Recorder - Both phones can record 4K 30fps and FullHD 1080p 30fps clips but Pocophone F1 has slo-mo video recording capabilities
Operating System and User Interface - Honor Play and Pocophone F1 both run Android 8.1 Oreo OS. However, each phone features a skin or a set of customization on top of the platform. The former has EMUI 8.2 interface while the latter comes with MIUI 9.6. Both UIs look clean and organized but EMUI is known for having a more lush set of innovative software enhancements, which has become one of Huawei's expertise in the mobile scene.
CPU and GPU - The two are powered by flagship-level chipsets but based on benchmark scores Pocophone F1 has clear superiority in this department; Thanks to its Snapdragon 845 processor that's also inside powerhouse handsets like the ultra-high-end Samsung Galaxy Note9 and LG G7 ThinQ, which cost almost thrice as much.
RAM - Pocophone F1 is clearly better in this department as its base model already comes with 6GB of RAM versus just 4GB on the Honor Play. More RAM, ideally, should result to smoother multitasking experience.
Internal Storage - The base model of Pocophone F1 and Honor Play have 64GB of expandable storage. But the former also has a 128GB variant that also comes with a higher price tag.
microSD Card Slot - Sadly, you'd have to sacrifice Dual SIM capability on these two models if you want to get more space as their microSD card slot is not dedicated.
Bluetooth - Pocophone F1 comes with the more energy-efficient Bluetooth 5.0
WiFi and 4G LTE - They are pretty even in these connectivity options.
Privacy and Security - Both handsets have a Fingerprint Scanner at the back and Facial Recognition software integrated within the front facing camera.
Battery - Pocophone F1 has a larger 4,000 mAh Li-Po non-removable battery while Honor Play only has a 3,750 mAh pack. Both phones support fast charging through their USB Type C ports.
Build Quality - I'll give this one to Honor Play as it flaunts a real metal shell versus just plastic on the Pocophone F1. Nonetheless, the latter has Kevlar version that looks quite interesting.
Price - Honor Play is more affordable than the base model of Pocophone F1 by PHP 2,000, which is considerable.
So, overall, which smartphone is better? Well, I'd say that - based solely on the list of specs shown in the table - in terms of internal hardware, imaging capabilities, and battery size, Pocophone F1 is the clear winner. However, when we talk about price, build quality, display size and screen-to-body ratio, as well as weight and dimensions, Honor Play is better. So I guess it's a mixed bag.
Personally, I think the Snapdragon 845 processor plus 6GB RAM of the Pocophone F1 are a real treat at PHP 17,990. Considering that those two specs are expected to only be available on ultra-flagship smartphones this year, I believe Pocophone F1 would be a pretty fine purchase -- especially for gamers and power users.
But hey, that's just me. Let me know which of these two stellar midrange Android smartphones you prefer. Share your thoughts with me via our comments section below or through social media. Cheers!
