Best-Selling Smartphone Brands in The Philippines for First Half of 2018, Revealed by IDC
Trusted and respected global research company, the International Data Corporation, recently released its list of the Top Five Smartphone Vendors in the Philippines for H12018 or the first half of this year based on the agency's Quarterly Mobile Phone Tracker nationwide study.
The term "vendor" essentially means "seller". Hence, I'd say IDC's list simply represents the best-selling handset brands in our country from January to June 2018.
In the official press release that they sent TechPinas on the first week of October 2018, International Data Corporation didn't really disclose the exact sales figures of these brands for the said period. However, the order of the vendors - that is, from #1 to #5 - was clear.
Proudly Pinoy tech company Cherry Mobile is at the top stop as it continues to lead the smartphone industry in terms of unit market share. Despite experiencing a slight decline in sales due to fierce competition posed international brands and their effective marketing strategies, Cherry Mobile remained #1. On October 12, 2018, CM officially launched its much awaited Flare S7 Series Android phones which will surely delight budget-conscious gadget buyers who want to get great value for their hard-earned money.
As in the previous study period, Samsung is still at #2 -- thanks to its strong presence across all smartphone price categories; The Galaxy J and A Series for low-end to midrange and its flagship Galaxy S and Note series for high-end to ultra-premium.
Chinese brand Vivo climbed up a notch to third spot within just year with its aggressive marketing efforts for the selfie-centric Vivo V9 Android smartphone with large display. On top of that, shipments for their entry-level Y-series increased with the launch of Vivo Y71 and Y85. The high-end Vivo X21 was also launched in the Philippines as the first ever smartphone with an in-display fingerprint scanner, capturing the fancy of many Filipinos.
OPPO stays very popular in the Philippines with its much-talked-about smartphones, big mall ads, top celebrity endorsers, and determined promodisers. Earlier this year, the Chinese company launched the OPPO F7, OPPO A71, and OPPO F7 Youth, which were all embraced by Filipino millennials, including from students to young professionals. In fact, OPPO F7 - with its 25 MegaPixel Selfie Camera and Super Full View Display - became the best-selling OPPO smartphone released in the Philippines so far.
Positive blogger reviews, online ads, retail displays, and television commercials featuring celebrity endorsers allowed Huawei to penetrate the best-sellers list at the #5 position.
According to IDC, flexible payment terms provided by financing companies like Home Credit as well as the growing needs and demands of Filipino mobile consumers will lead them to purchase more powerful and more expensive smartphones coming from their low-end devices. This will translate to increased sales of midrange to high-end handsets -- and this has actually started in H12018.
