Smart Leads Mobile Data Speeds for Video in the Philippines - OpenSignal
London-based research company OpenSignal has just released a follow-up to its previous State of Mobile Video report back in September 2018.
This time they included East Asian countries per operator and detailed mobile video experience performances of telecom carriers in Singapore, Australia, Taiwan, Myanmar, Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia, Cambodia and the Philippines.
In our country, OpenSignal's study showed that Smart garnered a video experience score of 42.2 which is better than Globe Telecom's 29.2. Smart's video speeds are also well above the Philippines’ overall score of 34.98. As such, we can conclude that - based on the findings by this respected research company - Smart has been providing its customers the better video experience in the Philippines.
Interestingly enough, Smart Communications' mobile video data performance is comparable with video experience on carriers in the United States. An earlier blog post by OpenSignal shows Smart’s score to be at par with that of international carriers, such as AT&T’s score of 40.88 and Sprint’s 41.1.
This is not the first time that Smart has been cited and recognized by OpenSignal. Earlier this year, OpenSignal also awarded Smart for having the fastest LTE network in the Philippines, and gave it four citations: Best in 4G LTE download speed; Best in overall download speed; Best 4G latency performance; and Best 3G latency performance.
On top of that, OpenSignal’s Mobile Networks Update in August 2018, which covers the months of May to July this year, shows that Smart LTE download speeds are also ahead nationwide at 13.09 Mbps (vs competitor’s 7.34 Mbps), as well as across all measured areas: at 15.24 Mbps in National Capital Region (vs. 8.43 Mbps); 13.48 Mbps in North Central Luzon (vs. 6.02 Mbps); 10.59 Mbps in South Luzon (vs 6.47 Mbps); 10.49 Mbps in the Visayas (vs 7.42 Mbps); and 12.23 Mbps in Mindanao (vs 6.95 Mbps). Smart also has lower 3G and 4G latency at 98.28ms and 53.48ms, respectively.
According to OpenSignal, their video experience metric measures exactly what consumers are experiencing when they watch videos. Built on an International Telecommunication Union (ITU)-based approach for measuring video quality, the data they present is derived from several underlying parameters based on real-world measurements of video streams from the world’s largest video content providers.
As global demand for mobile video continues to rise, the demand for better video experience is also ever-increasing. In its first State of Mobile Video report, OpenSignal found that the best mobile video experience can be found in Europe, with Czech Republic topping the list of 69 covered countries with a score of 68.52. The Philippines scored 34.98 in the September 2018 study, which is sadly still one of the slowest speeds in the world.
According to Smart, internet speeds in the Philippines will further improve as network operators expand LTE coverage across the archipelago. Also, more Filipinos must also start using LTE handsets, since LTE handset penetration in the Philippines still lags behind our neighboring countries.
Thankfully, many handset brands including OPPO, Vivo, Cherry Mobile, Starmobile, Huawei, Cloudfone, and Nokia are now starting to offer more affordable LTE-enabled Android smartphones in our country. This will certainly help to democratize the use of ultra-fast internet speeds in all regions of the Philippines.
