Nokia 9 PureView Philippines Price and Release Date Guesstimate, Specs, Features
This TechPinas blog post aims to collate all relevant news and information about the Nokia 9 PureView. Trust that we'll update this entry every time we hear reliable reports about HMD Global's 2019 powerhouse cameraphone.
Note: All details presented in this post about the above-mentioned phone are based on leaks disclosed by insiders who have good track record as regards revealing information on yet-to-be-announced mobile devices.
Overview
Nokia 9 PureView is slated to be the new top-of-the-line Android smartphone of HMD Global, which is touted as the New Home of Nokia Phones. This handset is expected to be first ever handset to have six cameras at the back, one of which being a depth sensor.
Hexa-Cam PureView Module Powered by Light Technology
Multiple camera set-ups have clearly become the trend in the mobile industry these days. In fact, some of the best cameraphones in the past couple of years - including Samsung Galaxy S9 and Note9 as well as Huawei P20 Pro and Mate 20 Pro - featured two or three cameras at the back.
It is believed that Nokia 9 PureView will also have several cameras at the back - six, to be exact. However, the way that these cameras work will be different compared to what most consumers have come to expect from these modules.
According to insiders, the hexa-cam set-up of the Nokia 9 PureView will be powered by a unique imaging software by a company called "Light".
To quote the founders of the company, "Light is pioneering the era of the software-defined camera. Combining breakthrough optics technology with sophisticated computational software, Light cameras deliver high-quality imaging in a compact, cost-effective footprint."
From what I understand, it seems that the Light system is designed in such a way that all cameras can interact or work with each other to deliver great sharpness, good pixel information, and stellar low light shots as well as to enable zoom, super resolution mode, depth of field control in post, bokeh effect in portraits, and 13 stops of dynamic range. Hence, its capabilities are not just limited to zoom or telephoto.
Pretty interesting, right? Personally, I think that if HMD Global can get the software right for this multi-cam system, the Nokia 9 PureView could very well end up being one of the best cameraphones ever released. Off hand, I'm excited to learn more about the interaction of the cameras through the Light software.
Elegant and Durable Build
Nokia 9 PureView is said to have a Gorilla Glass front and back panels that sandwich an aluminum mid-frame with chamfered or diamond-cut edges. The glass sheets give the device an air of corporate sophistication and understated elegance while the real metal body makes the phone more rugged and durable.
Large High-Resolution Screen with In-Display Fingerprint Scanner
HMD Global's 2019 flagship release sports a notch-less 6-inch QHD+ AMOLED display that's large and brilliant enough to deliver an outstanding viewing experience whether you are browsing photos, viewing videos, playing 3D games, watching vlogs, or reading blogs. But what's truly special about this screen is that it features an In-Display Fingerprint Scanner similar to what we've seen on Vivo and OPPO smartphones. This finger sensor is particularly useful when using your thumb to unlock the device while it's resting on a table or if you're holding it.
Flagship Level Internal Hardware
Insiders say that Nokia 9 PureView will have a 10nm Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 845 processor that's complemented by 6GB of RAM and 128GB of internal storage that can be expanded using the hybrid secondary nanoSIM slot that also takes in microSD cards. While the combination of these innards makes for a powerful Android smartphone, I think that Snapdragon 845 is already quite dated. I wish that HMD Global would go for the newer Snapdragon 855 if there's still time to do it -- just to give this model a better fighting chance in today's market.
Android One Program
Nokia 9 PureView runs the latest Android 9.0 Pie operating system right out of the box. The OS doesn't have any skin on top of it because this smartphone model is part of the Android One Program, which means that it guaranteed to receive security updates and firmware upgrades for two years straight from Google.
Availability in the Philippines
As of writing, HMD Philippines hasn't released any official statement about the imminent availability of the Nokia 9 PureView in this market. However, considering that the company has been prioritizing our country as regards early product launches, I think that we will be one of the first to receive this model when it finally gets released. For those who are wondering, my price guesstimate for Nokia 9 PureView in PH is around PHP 45,000 if and when it gets launched by the tail-end of Q1 2019 or early Q2 2019.
Nokia 9 PureView will be officially unveiled by HMD Global during the company's keynote presentation at Mobile World Congress 2019 in Barcelona, Spain on February 24, 2019.
