Sony Xperia 5 Philippines Price and Release Date Guesstimate, Full Specs, Key Features
As of writing, Sony Xperia XZ2 from 2018 is the last flagship-level Android smartphone that Sony Philippines officially launched in the Philippines.
Since the start of 2019, I haven't heard from the company as regards potential new Xperia releases in our country, which is a bit sad since I'm a big Sony fan.
However, this doesn't mean that the legendary Japanese tech giant has altogether stopped crafting smartphones. In fact, at the on-going IFA 2019 tech exhibition in Berlin, Sony has just officially announced a new high-end Xperia handset that will surely delight long-time followers of the brand.
The all-new Sony Xperia 5 has several notable features that make it a real powerhouse when it comes to enjoying and creating content.
Like the Sony Xperia 1 released earlier this year, Sony Xperia 5 has a tall OLED Triluminos display which - for me - serves as its primary identifying physical characteristic compared to other 2019 smartphones.
This 21:9 CinemaWide 6.1-inch FullHD+ panel gives you more screen real estate when browsing your friends' posts on social media and even when viewing TV series or movies in widescreen.
Because this display is so tall, Dual Screen viewing or doing two tasks at once becomes a more enjoyable experience on the device.
Standing shoulder to shoulder with other top-of-the-line handset models this 2019, Sony Xperia 5 also has a Triple Rear Camera module that gives the user maximum flexibility when taking photos or shooting videos.
The primary 12 MegaPixel f/1.6 camera has a 26mm Wide Lens, Predictive Dual Pixel Phase Detection AutoFocus, as well as 5-axis Optical Image Stabilization -- and these features make it a reliable shooter in various lighting conditions, even when there's little ambient light.
There's also a 12 MegaPixel f/2.4 secondary cam with 52mm Telephoto Lens that lets you zoom in the subject without physically moving closer to it. This snapper also benefits from the same autofocus and stabilization innovations that the primary camera has.
Finally, this set-up incorporates a 12 MegaPixel f/2.4 tertiary shooter with 16mm Ultra-Wide Lens, which is great for capturing group photos and landscape images.
According to Sony, the Xperia 5's cameras incorporate professional-grade imaging technologies that were inspired by the company's Alpha mirrorless camera division, including Eye AutoFocus and AI software.
Great for vloggers and Youtube content creators, Sony Xperia 5's primary rear cam can also shoot 4K videos at 24 or 30 frames per second as well as FullHD clips at 30, 60, and up to a whopping 960 frames per second for ultra-slow motion.
If you prefer using the phone's 8 MegaPixel f/2.0 front-facing camera for recording your travel videos, tech reviews, or make-up vlogs, this shooter can take FullHD clips at 30 frames per second.
Now, let's talk about internal hardware.
A flagship-level release through and through, Sony Xperia 5 runs its Xperia UI skinned Android 9.0 operating system with a 7nm Octa Core Qualcomm Snapdragon 855 incorporating an Adreno 640 GPU for buttery gaming experience even when running resource intensive titles.
This processor is complemented by 6GB of RAM as well as 128GB of internal storage that can be augmented using the hybrid secondary nanoSIM slot that can also take in a microSD memory card.
Frankly, though, I kind of wish that this model had 8GB of RAM at least plus up to maximum of 512GB of ROM just to make it even more competitive. But it is what it is.
For privacy and security, this model has a side-mounted Fingerprint Scanner just like its Xperia Z and XZ Series predecessors from years past as well as Facial Recognitions. These features add a veritable layer of protection on top of the usual pattern or pass-code unlock.
Sony Xperia 5 is powered a rather small 3,140 mAh Li-Ion battery pack that can quickly charged through the USB Type C port which supports 18W Fast Charging.
If there's anything I don't quite like about the Sony Xperia 5, it would have to be its lack of a 3.5mm audio jack, which would have been very useful for content creators who still use a reliable wired microphone.
Sony - it seems - tried to make up for it by putting Stereo Speakers with Dolby Atmos technology on the device. However, I still find it odd that this Xperia lacks that port given that Sony still sells many amazing wired headsets. I really wish that they didn't follow this terrible trend.
Anyway, in case Sony decides to bring back the 3.5mm audio jack on future Xperia phones, I hope they place it at the rear of the handset, beside the USB Type C port. I think that's the best placement for it.
Featuring Corning Gorilla Glass 6 front and back panels sandwiching a tough and elegant aluminum mid-frame, Sony Xperia 5 dons an official global SRP of $999 USD or around PHP 51,000 (with current conversion), which is also my local price guesstimate for it.
Sadly, I haven't heard any word from Sony Philippines on the potential availability of this model in our market. I believe there are still many loyal Sony Xperia Pinoy fans and if you ask me, that should be enough reason for the company to release this device here even in limited numbers. I hope they're currently looking into it. Gosh, I miss Sony Xperia!
