Affordable 5G Android Smartphones Powered by MediaTek Processors, Arriving in 2020
For the entirety of 2019, all conversations about 5G mobile connectivity on handsets revolved around flagship-level or ultra-premium models like the Samsung Galaxy S10+, Samsung Galaxy Note 10 and Note10+, as well the Vivo NEX 3 -- and understandably so.
After all, Qualcomm pretty much had a monopoly when it comes to offering SoCs that support 5G or 100Gbps mobile network data speeds. Their Snapdragon 855 Plus is currently positioned at the top-of-the-line echelon, powering only a few very expensive Android smartphones.
Well, today - December 10, 2019, I bring great news -- especially for budget-conscious consumers who want to experience new and innovative features on their gadgets without having to spend way too much money.
Taiwanese chipset-maker MediaTek recently announced two new 5G-enabled processors - namely, MT6885 and MT6873. These SoCs are slated to power entry-level and midrange Android smartphones in 2020. Experts expect these chipsets to run affordable handsets models by OPPO, Vivo, Xiaomi, and - get this - even Samsung, in the near future.
Last month, MediaTek also announced the high-end Dimensity 1000 5G-enabled chipset with an integrated modem supporting 4600 Mbps download speeds and 2500 Mbps upload speeds.
Since the early 2010's, MediaTek has consistently been at the forefront of allowing entry-level consumers to enjoy the freshest innovations in the mobile industry and of democratizing the use of smartphones in general. Frankly, MediaTek has greatly yet quietly contributed to making Android handsets more accessible to the masses.
As a tech blogger who has witnessed and covered the incredible rise of Android smartphones since the first model came out in 2008, I am grateful to MediaTek for their consistent effort to put their stellar mobile innovations at arm's reach of every consumer.
