DOST-NCR Launches "Pamana Agham: Siyensya sa Bawat Habi at Hibla" for Sustainable Development and Tourism

The Department of Science and Technology - National Capital Region (DOST-NCR) officially launched Pamana Agham: Siyensya sa Bawat Habi at Hibla on August 28, 2024, at Casa Manila, Intramuros, Manila.

The event, led by DOST Secretary Renato U. Solidum Jr., in partnership with the Department of Tourism (DOT), headed by Secretary Christina Garcia Frasco, marked a significant step towards promoting sustainable development and tourism through science, technology, and cultural preservation. The launch was made possible with the support of the DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute, Intramuros Administration, and Partnerships for Sustainability Education (PSE).

Importance of Weaving in Cultural Enrichment

DOST Undersecretary for Regional Operations, Engr. Sancho A. Maborrang, emphasized the importance of preserving and enriching Filipino culture through weaving. He posed a critical question: “Nawawala ba ang mayamang paniniwalang ito sa pagpasok ng siyensya, teknolohiya at inobasyon? Ang sagot ay hindi; bagkus ay pinagyayaman pa ang mga katutubong sining na ito at ginagawang mas makabuluhan para sa kasalukuyang henerasyon." This statement underlines that science, technology, and innovation do not erode traditional arts but instead enhance them, making them more relevant for future generations.

Weaving as an Expression of Filipino Creativity and Sustainability

DOST Secretary Solidum echoed this sentiment, stressing that the culture of weaving should be passed on to future generations as it reflects the natural creativity of Filipinos. He remarked, "Ang kulturang habi ay dapat ipamana dahil ito ay ekspresyon ng ating paggiging likas na malikhain, ito ay nagpapakita ng ating sustenableng paggamit ng ating likas na yaman, isa itong makulay na bahagi ng kulturang Pilipino, at ito ay sumasalamin sa pagsasanib ng tradisyon at inobasyon." Weaving, as a vibrant aspect of Filipino culture, symbolizes the fusion of tradition and innovation while promoting sustainable use of natural resources.

Strengthening Sustainability Education

A key highlight of the event was the signing of a Memorandum of Agreement (MOA) between DOST-NCR and PSE. This agreement aims to strengthen cooperation in implementing various projects and initiatives related to sustainability education. The partnership will focus on conducting studies on sustainability and equipping relevant authorities with the necessary skills to achieve the Philippines' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). This collaboration is expected to contribute significantly to the country's efforts in promoting sustainable development.

TourLISTA Application: Enhancing Tourism Data Reporting

Another notable milestone during the event was the signing of a project agreement between DOST and DOT for the TourLISTA Application, led by DOST-MIMAROPA. The TourLISTA Application aims to facilitate the reporting and analysis of tourism data, serving as a valuable tool for the government in developing priorities, plans, and projects in the tourism sector. This project is part of the Smart and Sustainable Cities and Communities Program, which seeks to provide smart solutions for cities and communities across the country.

Halal Modules for Sustainable Tourism

As part of the event, DOST-XI formally handed over Halal Modules to DOT, further promoting sustainable tourism in the Philippines. The Halal Modules are expected to play a crucial role in expanding the scope of sustainable tourism initiatives, particularly in ensuring that the needs of Muslim travelers are met while preserving the country's rich cultural heritage.

Celebrating Innovation and Creativity through Art

The program also featured an Awarding Ceremony for the winners of the Sining Siyensya competition, which involved Persons Deprived of Liberty (PDLs) in collaboration with the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology-NCR. This competition highlighted the creativity and talent of PDLs, showcasing their artistic expressions through science. The event continued with "Ang Pamanang Habi" Fashion Show, which presented the beauty and craftsmanship of traditional Filipino weaving.
