Discounted iPhones in China? Apple Responds to Growing Competition From Chinese Rivals

  • Rare Discounts Alert: Apple slashes iPhone prices in China amidst rising local competition.
  • Lunar New Year Promo: Four-day sale offers up to 500 yuan or PHP 3,800 savings on flagship models.
  • Chinese Brands' Competitive Edge: Local brands in China see sales surge with aggressive pricing and new launches.

Shoppers in China are in for a treat as Apple takes a bold step to offer rare discounts on its coveted iPhones. The four-day promotional event, kicking off on Saturday, 4 January, promises price cuts of up to 500 Chinese Yuan (around PHP 3,800). This surprising move comes as the tech giant faces mounting competition from local smartphone makers and navigates the challenges of a slowing economy in one of its biggest markets.

Apple has long been known for maintaining its premium pricing strategy, but the company is now making adjustments to cater to shifting consumer behavior in China. Will Wong, a senior research manager at IDC, explained, “Apple's strategy has changed to adapt to the change in Chinese consumers' shopping behavior. The value-seeking trend has made price discounts more attractive to consumers. Apple may fall behind other competitors if it doesn't adopt such a pricing strategy.”

Why Apple Is Discounting iPhones

Chinese shoppers are becoming increasingly price-conscious due to the country’s ongoing economic challenges. As a result, even premium brands like Apple are stepping up with competitive offers to win back hesitant customers.

Apple's current promotion includes its flagship models, such as the iPhone 16 Pro and iPhone 16 Pro Max, alongside some older devices. The iPhone 16 Pro, which typically starts at 7,999 yuan, will now be available with a 500-yuan discount. Meanwhile, the high-end iPhone 16 Pro Max, starting at 9,999 yuan, is also included in the sale.

Huawei and Local Brands Up the Game

While Apple’s discounts have captured attention, local brands like Huawei are also making waves. Huawei has slashed prices for its high-end smartphones by as much as 20%, reflecting the intense competition in China’s smartphone market.

Huawei, which re-entered the premium segment last August, has seen remarkable growth despite ongoing US sanctions. With cutting-edge technology powering its latest releases, Huawei's sales surged by more than 40% in the third quarter of 2024. In comparison, Apple’s sales dipped by 0.3% during the same period.

A Broader Shift in China’s Economy

Apple and Huawei’s pricing strategies are part of a larger trend across industries in China. Retailers, car makers, and even the government are stepping up efforts to encourage spending in a slowing economy.

Despite Apple’s efforts, local competitors like vivo and Xiaomi continue to make significant strides. Vivo, in particular, claimed the title of China’s best-selling smartphone maker in the third quarter of 2024, with sales soaring by over 20%.

Apple’s decision to lower iPhone prices in China reflects a new era of competition in one of the world’s most dynamic smartphone markets. As local brands like Huawei, vivo, and Xiaomi continue to innovate and grow, Apple must strike a balance between maintaining its premium image and appealing to value-driven shoppers.
